Hi, Keith here. Sometimes when I fit a receiver in the canal hearing aid, that is the hearing aid that goes over the ear, and the little wire, and the speaker or receiver that goes into the ear canal. Just like this one right here. The hearing aid goes over the ear the speaker or receiver goes into the ear.

Sometimes when I fit these, the stock receiver that comes with it fits just great. There’s different size rubber tips that we can use, open ones, closed ones, doubles. And most of the time we can find the rubber tip that fits your ear perfectly. However, sometimes even these stock receivers don’t work well for all people. Maybe the ear canal is too small, maybe it goes up at an angle inside their head and slips out of their ear.

It’s possible that your fingers may not have feeling in the ends of them, or your dexterity is not very good. Arthritis in those kinds of things prevent a person from getting the stock receiver just in the right spot and get it into their ear.

In those cases what we do is make a custom earpiece called an earmold for them. And when we do that, I’ll take some silicone material from the silicone gun, it looks kind of scary but it’s really not, it’s really quite easy, feels cool in the ear. And we make an impression of your ear. And it comes out kind of like this. It can be pink or blue, whatever color silicon we have. We take this and we send it to the factory and they will make a 3-D image of it. Just like this one.

They then will take the acrylic material, from this, and mold a speaker inside this with a wire coming out. And it comes out looking like this. We attach the wire to the existing hearing aid and this custom earpiece is molded just for your ear! And all you have to do just put it over your ear and plug it in. Just like that, boom. And it fits your ear nobody else.

And once in a while this custom earpiece needs a little extra holding power because of the way your canal is. So we’ll take it one step further from just this small earmold, and we will make it into what’s called a skeleton earmold which has a little extra locking piece that locks into the bowl of your ear.

It’s easy to get a hold of, grab it, and put it in your ear and it locks in place and doesn’t move. Now, many times the smaller one works perfectly for people. Most of the time the smaller one works perfectly for people. But we have the option of doing all different kinds of things for people.

The only way to find out which one is right for you are used to try them and come find out. And that’s why we demonstrate these kinds of hearing aids on people all the time.
